For nearly seven years, Johnny Gray has been a key part of operations at WM New Zealand's Redvale Landfill and Energy Park.
As Disposal Team Lead, Johnny plays an important role in helping ensure the site runs safely and efficiently every day. From allocating work and planning daily operations to supporting his team and resolving issues as they arise, his focus is on setting people up for success.
While leadership is a major part of the role, Johnny is never far from the action.
"I'll always jump into a machine and help out where needed," he says.
For Johnny, one of the biggest attractions of working in the waste management industry is the opportunity to operate a wide range of heavy machinery.
"If you're interested in machines and equipment, you'll really enjoy the role," he says.
The hands-on experience gained on site is valuable and transferable, providing skills that can open opportunities across the wider civil and infrastructure sectors.
"You get to learn how to drive a large range of heavy machinery. It's kind of hard to get this level of experience anywhere else."
Working at a landfill comes with plenty of variety, and some moments are more memorable than others.
One experience that stands out for Johnny was responding to a small landfill fire in the middle of the night, believed to have been caused by an incorrectly disposed lithium battery. After receiving the call, he headed to site in the early hours of the morning, operating machinery to safely contain the fire and supporting emergency responders with specialist knowledge of landfill operations.
"It was satisfying knowing we could stop the smouldering from causing any further damage," he says.
The experience also highlights a challenge faced by the waste industry. Lithium batteries can pose serious fire risks when they are not disposed of correctly, which is why safe battery disposal remains so important.
What keeps Johnny motivated after all these years is simple.
"I enjoy the work. It keeps me grounded and gives me purpose."
He also values being part of a hardworking team and contributing to an operation that helps support communities every day.
For anyone considering a career as a driver or operator in the waste management industry, Johnny's advice is straightforward.
"Be committed and reliable. There's nothing like having your leaders feel they can depend on you."
When he's not at Redvale, Johnny enjoys spending time with his family and making the most of New Zealand's ski season. After putting in the mahi through the busy summer months, he looks forward to hitting the slopes in winter.
"I go hard at work during the summer and then go hard in the ski season."
It's that same dedication, both on and off the job, that has made Johnny such a valued member of the WM New Zealand team.
