Lawn clippings must not go in your garden‑waste skip bin. In Blenheim, lawn clippings can contain persistent herbicide residues that do not fully break down during composting. These residues can contaminate compost and damage gardens.
This is a particular issue locally because:
• Persistent herbicides are commonly used on lawns and turf in the region
• Dry conditions mean these chemicals break down more slowly
• Even small amounts of contaminated grass can spoil a whole batch of compost
What you can do instead
• Leave clippings on the lawn – Fine clippings break down quickly and return nutrients to the soil.
• Use as mulch (untreated lawns only) – Spread thinly if no herbicides have been used.
• Home compost (herbicide free lawns only) – Mix with dry material to keep compost healthy.
• General waste (landfill) – Use this option if you’re unsure whether herbicides were used.

From sponsoring local charities to improving the safety and sustainability of every collection, WM New Zealand is proud to serve Nelson and Marlborough — keeping the region beautiful for generations to come.
The team regularly get involved in local clean-ups and environmental initiatives, helping to protect the natural beauty of Whakatū and ensure public spaces remain safe, tidy, and cared for by the community.

The WM New Zealand Nelson whānau joined the festive fun at the annual Nelson Santa Parade, spreading Christmas cheer throughout the city.
The team were proud to represent WM and celebrate the season alongside customers, suppliers, and locals. Their bright smiles and energy captured the spirit of the day — a wonderful way to thank the community for their ongoing support and wrap up another busy year.

The Nelson team also rolled up their sleeves to take care of their surroundings, including a clean-up along the Whakatū bypass and the local railway reserve.
After a quick health and safety briefing, “Scott the train” helped transport volunteers and collected waste back to the yard, where the team enjoyed a shared lunch together — a great example of teamwork, environmental care, and local pride in action.
We’re proud to back the people and causes that make our region stronger. Because waste isn’t the only thing we care about reducing — we’re here to make a positive impact for people too. WM New Zealand sponsors community organisations, including:

Mentoring young people across Nelson and Tasman

Raising funds and awareness for men’s health alongside Gibbons Naylor

Supporting compassionate end-of-life care in our community
WM New Zealand is proud to support local businesses and projects across Te Tauihu that are driving real change in how waste is managed. From Scott Construction’s Te Āwhina Marae project, which achieved 48% waste recovery through education, collaboration, and recycling, to innovative plasterboard recovery solutions with Winstone Wallboards, our partnerships in Nelson are helping to power a more sustainable, circular construction industry.
