Our People: Brent Walker

Brent Walker - Hero

Even after nearly four decades of operating heavy vehicles, South Island driver Brent Walker continues to raise the bar — and this year, that dedication has earned him a top spot among all WM New Zealand drivers.

Leading the way

Each month, WM drivers across the country are ranked on a leaderboard that tracks safe and efficient driving. Brent’s focus and consistency have seen him rise to the very top of more than 900 WM drivers nationwide, earning him recognition as South Island Driver of the Month for September.

Operating a heavy combination truck exceeding 25 tonnes takes precision and patience — qualities Brent has honed over a lifetime on the road. He’s developed his own processes to continually improve, using the vehicle’s weight to his advantage when slowing into corners or roundabouts, reducing brake wear while improving fuel efficiency and control.

A WM original

Brent joined WM in 2005 as one of the original drivers at Kate Valley Landfill and Energy Park, and apart from a brief move south in 2013, he’s been part of the team ever since — nearly 20 years in total.

He’s modest about his achievements, saying he’s not a perfectionist, but simply “tries to put 100% effort into everything” he does. Whether it’s behind the wheel, completing paperwork, or polishing the rig after a long day, Brent treats each task as a small challenge to do his best.

Team first

According to Operations Supervisor Akuila Wong, Brent’s reliability and teamwork are what truly set him apart.

“Brent is always willing to lend a hand,” Akuila says. “He’s stayed late to help other drivers, volunteered for extra runs, and consistently puts the team before himself. He’s a real role model for others.”

Brent holds nearly every driving endorsement and National Certificate available and has spent close to a decade training new drivers on hook-lift trucks — passing on his experience to the next generation.

Words of wisdom

When asked what advice he’d give to new drivers, Brent keeps it simple: don’t rush.

“I’ve seen drivers who wanted to go home before they even started their day,” he laughs. “That’s when mistakes happen. Slow down and do it properly.”

He also encourages others to take care of their health.

“After years of jumping down from truck cabs, my knees remind me that looking after yourself matters. You don’t think about it when you’re young — but you should.”

With his focus on safety, teamwork, and continual improvement, Brent embodies the professionalism and dedication that make WM New Zealand proud.

We’re lucky to have you on the team, Brent.
