WM New Zealand has confirmed it will apply for resource consent to extend the life of Redvale Landfill and Energy Park, using the Government’s fast-track consenting pathway.
The application provides a time-limited solution to keep Auckland’s waste network operating safely and affordably until the Auckland Regional Landfill (ARL) is operational.
Our third consultation focused on seeking feedback on a proposal to extend operations at Redvale Landfill & Energy Park until 2036, providing a secure and responsible way to manage Auckland’s residual waste while the Auckland Regional Landfill in Wayby Valley is completed.
Earlier this year, we asked Aucklanders to share their views on how the region could best manage its residual waste. The consultation explored a wide range of alternatives, from new waste technologies and new landfill sites to more ambitious recycling and recovery targets.
While waste minimisation remains our long-term focus, none of these alternatives could be delivered, consented, or scaled in time for the transition period.
Our second consultation focused on how Auckland’s residual waste could be rebalanced across existing landfills. It looked at what this would mean for communities near those sites and for commercial customers who rely on reliable waste services.
The feedback helped clarify what matters most, including managing odour, traffic, and long-term certainty, and has shaped the proposal now under consultation.
